Unsubstantiated security claims

Page history last edited by Justin Spratt 12 years, 9 months ago

Often, we get see claims to security on web pages, designed to assure the user that everything is under control.  In general, these claims are completely meaningless as anyone can put whatever text they wish on a webpage.  What guarantees security is not a message, and therefore seeing a message indicating "security" doesn't change a thing.

Claims like the following are meaningless:

Other examples of meaningless security claims are the following:

  • "This message was checked by NOD32  antivirus system."  (Hooray!  A virus could never claim this... NOT)
  • "No virus found.  This email has been scanned using the latest Symantec Norton Anti-virus software v. 6.01. "  (Pathetic.)

Security is a weakest link problem, and there are many links in the chain of computer security.  You should never take any security claim as authoritative.  The only way to know that you are secure is to trust no one ("TNO").
